Missional Minute
Being missional can be a scary thing for us as Anglicans. Even though a person's faith is strong and they may be regular attenders at their church, and they may really love Jesus and desire to serve Him, there is a hesitancy to sharing that faith with others beyond our church community. We don't want to be annoying or we overthink their reaction or we don't want to appear to be "holy rollers." We know in our heads that each small word or act can be a "mustard seed" spread to grow the Kingdom. But what can we do as small actions in practical terms? It can be offering a ride to someone who doesn't drive. It can be a smile or a kind word to that tired lady scanning your groceries. It can be offering a sandwich to the guy asking for spare change outside a grocery store. It can be sharing what you did or heard or felt at church last Sunday to a coworker. It can be just listening to a friend who is going through a rough patch. It can be asking, "How can I pray for you?" Here are two suggestions: simply take the opportunity to look at the other person as a beloved of God, and ask Him to guide you in your interactions. And stay curious. Learn where they are in their life and trust that God will give you understanding as to where you might act, ask, encourage, and support. Like exercising a muscle, it's in the doing of these little things often that will build our confidence and reinforce our faith on our own journey. Our job is to plant, to spread those mustard seeds. And God will take care of the growth. |

Pastoral Care TrainingNovember/December 2022 and February/March 2023 Do you have an interest, calling or are just curious about Pastoral Care? Maybe you want to be better equipped to support your church community, friends or your own family. We are all called to care and care deeply, as we are able, with one another. Maybe this is a “brush up” opportunity or time for skill refreshing. Please consider this an invitation to join us. Together we will reflect on who we are as pastoral caregivers and how we can use what we have to perhaps lessen the burden on another. Pastoral care is about listening and the ministry of presence, rooted in our love for each other and our faith in Jesus. Perhaps you know of someone in your church community that has taken this course or other pastoral training. Ask them about what they thought, what they learned; how things changed pastorally for them. In this course, there will be a bit of reading and/or reflecting as preparation for each of the evenings. There will be learning through new information, sharing and skill development. We will form a pastoral community on our own. I am extending two opportunities – November/December 2022 on Wednesdays and February/March 2023 on Tuesdays. This is a Zoom class. Dates are: Pastoral Care course 2022 Wednesdays – November 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, December 7 and 14. The time is 6:30 pm – 8:45 pm. Deadline to register will be October 24 or a full class. Pastoral Care course 2023 Tuesdays – February 14, 21, 28, March 7, 14, 21, 28. The time is 6:30 pm – 8:45 pm. Deadline to register will be February 3 or a full class. There will be a minimum of 6 people and a max of 15. Please register with Rev. Tracey. Questions are also welcome. Please indicate which course you would like to attend. |
Calgary School of DiscipleshipFaith, Witness and Ministry Course - to begin November 19 The Calgary School of Discipleship is pleased to announce the Faith, Witness and Ministry Course is now open for registration. The course will be held on four Saturday mornings, from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon, on November 19, November 26, December 3 and December 10, and led by The Rev. Chris Roth. In many people's minds, the word "ministry" refers to a domain restricted to clergy. All baptised Christians, however, are called by God into ministry. Jesus calls us to follow Him, and that means He also calls us to be a Christian for others. How our spirituality engages the world is the ministry we have been called into. This course explores how our personal faith journey relates to how we are called to engage the world as we follow Jesus. This is a required course for anyone pursuing any of the Licenses in Licensed Lay Ministry (License A, B or C), but is also open to anyone who is interested. To register please email Barbara Labrecque. |

Fall Upcoming Events
Foundations for Community Organizing: Please join us for the October offering on Friday, October 21 (7:00 to 9:30 pm) and Saturday, October 22 (9:00 am to 4:00 pm) for this training event. RSVP here. Our Foundations training is how we teach the key practices and philosophy of community organizing, and it is a chance to develop leaders in your parishes. The Action Assembly is happening on Thursday, November 3 at 7:00 pm at Temple B'nai Tikvah. RSVP here. This Assembly is how we gather, take action and press for the changes we have been calling for related to the City budget. Improving transit, building stronger communities, affordable housing and expanding Indigenous liaison officers are our budget focuses. We are hoping to have 200 to 300 people at this event. One of the gifts of the Pandemic is that it has moved mental health from the shadows into our shared public consciousness. This past year, our members wrote letters, signed petitions and met with government officials. This summer, the provincial government announced $197 million for school-based mental health supports in schools and pediatric rehabilitation. This amount included piloting new models for addressing mental health in schools, expanding the comprehensive school-based mental health program we had been advocating for and hiring more mental health professionals. This funding has the potential to not only address current mental health needs but to build the mental wellness of a generation through early intervention, prevention and education. We thank the Anglican Diocese of Calgary for its support of these efforts. |
