A Missional Minuteby Cathy Moore Hillcrest Seniors Home in Calgary is currently one of the hardest hit residences in Calgary in terms of Covid cases and deaths. It also happens to be home to some very dear friends of my husband and mine. This exceptional couple has faithfully served the Lord and the church and each other as missionaries and pastors their entire lives, and have been instrumental in modelling to us what it means to be unwavering in our faith. Last week my husband and I, along with three other couples, went to visit them. Standing on the grass beneath their window, we talked and sang some of their favourite hymns together. While I trust it was a time of blessing and encouragement to them, God was moving in other ways. While we were singing, an elderly gentleman pulled into the parkade. He turned off his vehicle, rolled down his window and listened to several songs. I could see the tears in his eyes. As we sought to bless our brother and sister, God was on a mission of his own! While we often think of being intentionally missional as reaching out to those who do not yet know him, when we are obedient to His command to love one another, He is lifted up and draws men to Himself. "By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." ... John 13:35 New King James Version |
Covid 19 Restrictions
Our diocese will continue only offering online services. No parish in the Diocese of Calgary will reopen physical gatherings without the Archbishop’s permission. At this point, we remain in the protocol of not allowing physical congregational services including weddings and funerals inside the church building. Re-opening for Worship: A Task Force of clergy and medical professionals has created a plan for re-opening of public worship. A Cover Letter, Checklist and Application Form have been sent to the Corporation members of each parish. Applications to re-open for worship are requested to be submitted to the Diocese Office by August 15. Any questions can be directed to the Executive Officer. |

Pastoral Care CourseHosted by our new Diocesan Pastoral Care Coordinator Tracey Stagg Looking for better words to say to someone who is hurting or regret you have said more than you would like? Is journeying with others in their time and space something that you would like to learn more about or revisit or are just curious about? Would a Diocesan Pastoral Care course with mentoring and training be of interest to you? Maybe it has just been a while and you would like to brush up a bit. Perhaps you would like to help with the pastoral care in your parish. Well, you have the opportunity! Currently in the Diocese, there is talk and action towards reaffirming our skills, abilities and confidence around caring pastorally for one another as children of God. The intention is to have locally responsive training with key fundamentals in listening, presence, theology of pastoral care, hearing, confidentiality and teamwork (to mention a few). This training and mentoring is open to anyone. Please consider this prayerfully and reflect with those near you if you would like to be more involved. More information will be forthcoming. |
Education for MinistryOpen House and Graduation Update Looking for a way to deepen your understanding of the Christian faith and enhance the connection between what you believe and how you live your daily life? The Education for Ministry (EfM) program combines independent study and weekly small group discussions to provide a basic grounding in theology to Christian laypeople. The EfM curriculum explores the content and origins of Scripture, follows Church history from its earliest days, and examines issues in Christian theology. Group members engage in individual and group theological reflection throughout their studies to bring our different life experiences and perspectives into conversation with our faith, helping to discern God’s call to each of us. EfM is an extension program of an Episcopal theological school; there is a lot to read (including the whole Bible) but there are no exams. Students commit to one year at a time and those completing all four years of the program receive a certificate of completion. Next year’s courses will run from September 2020 to May/June 2021, and registration is currently underway. Please contact ctubman@calgary.anglican.ca for information. |
Geneology SearchThe Johnston Family in the Coleman/Blairmore area We had a request for information regarding Canadian relatives. In the 1900's, a George Johnston was killed in a mining explosion. The service was held at St. Alban, Coleman, and he was laid to rest in Union Cemetery. His mother was Jane Johnston (nee Mounsey) of Cumbria, UK and father was John (Jack) Johnston. They had a large family. Eileen Neill, great-niece of Jane, would like to make contact with someone of that family. Please email diocese@calgary.anglican.ca for contact information. |

Diocese of Calgary Spiritual Care Phone Line
During this time of journeying through the COVID-19 pandemic, you may appreciate being able to speak with someone; to have a pastoral listening ear and someone to pray with. A number of our diocesan clergy and Lay Ministers have agreed to be on-call daily to respond to this need. If you would like prayer support, please call the number below. Any information shared will be kept in the strictest confidence. This ministry will be available daily from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm until July 31. (825) 205-9623 or 1-888-999-1551 ext 109.
A heart-felt thank you to all the Clergy and Lay members who volunteered to answer Spiritual Care Line calls over the past few months. We believe that making ourselves available in this way was just one way to let our parishes and communities know that we care and are here to journey with them. Due to a lack of calls coming in, we have decided to discontinue the Care Line, and are looking at new and creative ways to be present to those in need at this time. |
