Missional Minute
Seven years ago this month, I became involved with a group of people from our diocese who were interested in nurturing different methods of doing and presenting church. We were schooled by Judy Paulson from Wycliff College and others in the Toronto area on becoming more Missional in the church and to coach Churches to become more Missional. I initially thought this would be easy, start with a group of about 30 people and send them out to about thirty to fifty churches in the Diocese and present to them on how to be missional. Within a few months of training, we were then faced with a few obstacles. The obstacles included Covid, which stopped everything. We had a program but couldn’t present it. We tried Zoom with some success but in-house learning worked best. Our program was a work-in-progress; some parts were ready and others not. Our thirty initial presenters dwindled to about 12 but those stayed firmly committed to the program. One other obstacle was that not every parish wanted the program. Some passed, while others tried and fully embraced it. Others wanted to do it on their own, others just were not ready. Nevertheless, the Mission Coaches persevered and rewrote, and edited the program and continued albeit on a pace that allowed for a gradual work schedule. We had about eight 3–4-hour modules which could be presented by each coach. It appeared to be working. I was happy with the progress we made and doing God’s work. However I wanted some additional background and more examples. I prayed for more opportunities and soon God answered my prayers. About two months ago, a teacher from Wycliff College, Dr. John Bowen teamed up with Rev. Dr. Pilar Gateman and presented a course called Reimagining Church, a six-week program on what a Church could be. This happened on Tuesday evenings for a two-hour lecture, chats and videos. We were told of a church in Africa which late in the day celebrated with a meal and praise to God in communion, dancing, music songs and prayer. Another example was Bread Church, where everyone received a loaf of bread. There were examples of a bridge built to ford a river, only to find out that during construction the river relocated to make the bridge useless. Examples were taken from England Canada, US, Africa, in fact worldwide. There is a church in Hamilton Ontario where you can buy a meal (large sandwich) for $4.00 and tip with buttons. The buttons are put in a jar to help the next person with payment for their meal, $1.00 per button. This is called the Button Church. Many examples of mission were presented and all noted. I asked a young girl from Hamilton about the Button Church a few weeks ago. She responded that it was the best church she ever attended for the three years while a student at McMaster. The highlight for me was the week we spent on God Speed. The homework exercise was to watch a video called God Speed and prepare to discuss the content during the next session. My initial thoughts were that God moved with light speed with the millions praying and the needs to address, but when you analyze His work, God Speed can be slow and very prolonged. We were told that in actual fact, God Speed was the speed that Jesus walked on their journeys. Perhaps a pace of about three miles per hour. We must travel to the Reimaged Missional Church at God’s Speed to ensure His work is fully done. I relish the time spent on the program and learning about Missional Churches and moments. Learning never ends as we proceed in its pursuit. This month's Missional Minute contribution comes from Michael Larsen, St. Augustine, Lethbridge. |

Diocesan SynodFriday, October 23 and Saturday, October 24 Our Diocesan Synod was held on Friday, October 23 and Saturday, October 24. It was a joy to gather, to be inspired by our guests, to take care of legislative and election items and to be in fellowship and community with one another. Our theme was Living in Hope, and in every presentation, we heard thought-provoking ideas of how we as Christians in the Diocese of Calgary can do just that - hold on to the hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. During the Opening Worship Service, there was a service of Collation, during which The Ven. Bonnie Luft and The Ven. Deacon Charmaine Evans were appointed Archdeacons of Bow Valley and Calgary respectively. We were challenged in Archbishop Greg's address on Friday night to exercise hope in our lives and in our ministries. Bishop Jenny Andison of St. Paul Bloor Street, Toronto offered a comparison between hope and optimism, and we learned hope is much deeper, much more secure, for we have a sure foundation. We heard greetings from the ELCIC, the Moravian Church of Canada, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Calgary, and our Companion Diocese of the Windward Islands. Each of these representatives reiterated support for our work together in our journeys of faith. Presentations were made from the Parish of St. Andrew, Gleichen, Sorrento Retreat Centre, and the Refugee Committee. Each were encouraging and thought-provoking as we considered not only the work we do within this Diocese, but the need to rest, as well. At the close of Saturday, we were sent out into the world with joyous and energetic dancing on behalf of the St. Paul Dinka Congregation youth. All in all, it was an inspirational time and one of affirming the vision of hope within our church. If you would like more information, please contact your parish representatives or our office. |

St. Edmund Mission celebrates Thanksgiving
On Sunday, October 18, eleven of us gathered together for our Turkey Stew lunch and a Service of Reserved Sacrament led by Rev. Deacon David Ginther. We all enjoyed the chance to visit and catch up with one another. Following the Service, we recognized Charmaine Anderson for her service over the last three years in keeping us connected through our weekly Zoom Sunday services. It has been a labour of love on her part and we are truly thankful for all she has done! |

St. Ambrose Community Outreach
On October 31, St. Ambrose Anglican Church in Redcliff held their second annual community outreach, providing over one hundred people with candy, chips and hot chocolate. From 5:00 to 8:00, we also had the doors of the parish open. It was wonderful to see people from across the community come and not only partake of the treats, but in many cases ask to come inside the church and take a look around. |

Centered RetreatSaturday, November 7 from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm What is getting in the way of connecting with yourself, others and the Divine? On the potter's wheel, nothing lasting can be created until the clay is centered. Our lives work the same way. Working with clay by hand, we will explore ways to center our lives. Maybe you and your partner keep circling the same argument. Maybe you're snapping at your kids more than you'd like. Maybe stillness and prayer feel farther away than they used to be. There's a reason this happens, and it can change. Join Nancy Shadlock of Centered Mental Fitness and Pam Ehlert (SoulStream Partner) in partnership with The Wisdom Centre for a day of hands in clay, soulful conversation and simple neuroscience-based practices that bring your wisest self back online. You'll leave with: 1. Clarity on the inner Saboteur that most often pulls you away from the people you love; 2. Several 10-second tools you can use the moment it shows up; 3. New friends who also want to live from their wisest place; and 4. A clay piece to carry the learnings from the day home with you. Cost is $65. Please bring your own lunch. Beverage, morning snacks and all materials are included. For more infomation visit:

Linda ClaytonFormer Vanner and Vanning Committee Chair The family of Linda Clayton wished to share that long-time Vanning Committee Chair and former Vanner, Linda Clayton, passed away on August 15, 2026 after battling a complex neurological illness. Linda was a Vanner in 1976 with Heather Becker, and they travelled around rural Alberta in a van, hosting Vacation Bible Schools in small rural Anglican churches. Linda went on to chair the Vanning Committee that oversaw this program from 1989 until the program was sunset in 2006. She helped ensure that thousands of rural Alberta children learned about God in a fun and engaging way. Linda was a committed Christian, wife, mother and grandmother. She was also an RN for more than forty years. She is incredibly missed. Her obituary can be found here. |
