The Rev. Canon Erin Phillips led a team of volunteers that worked hard over the course of six days to collect food donations, make up the food packages, and deliver them to needy students at the University of Lethbridge.
This was a chaplaincy initiative that is heavily supported by the Anglican churches in Lethbridge, Coaldale, and Taber as well as our Presbyterian, Evangelical Lutheran, United, and Roman Catholic partners.
Immanuel Lutheran Church (LCC congregation) gave their hall as a depot; SaveOn Foods donated the bags; 40 volunteers sorted and packed bags; and, the U of L facilities staff transported the food to the university distribution curbside pickup point.
It took six days to do the first wave and they now do a weekly delivery of groceries to students who need help. So far 200 hampers have been delivered (over 400 bags or boxes of food) and they hope to keep it up through the summer or until students are allowed back on campus.
The provincial government recognized this initiative for its work in the launch of a new site to recognize volunteers.
